eCo Software newsletter, 200711

2007-11-26 22:07:26 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [eCo Software, news]

During the fall we released updates of: Evolutionary Sprint plan, ACPI subsystem, Panorama video drivers, General Network Utilities, Firewall ports setup, USB Dock, UNIAUD.

0. Evolutionary Sprint 2007/11 (aka ESWay)

ESWay is published as article (ESWay it's a plan, forecast of future eComStation development)

  • Evolutionary = don't migrate to other platform
  • Sprint = 1-2 years to improve situation (starting from fall 2006)

1. ACPI sub-system

Current version: 3.05, BETAZONE

We published ACPI documentation at ACPI homepage

We have improved some global critical things during 2007 (this tasks required global improvements in ACPI.PSD)

  • mutexes support (to delimit the access to ACPI variables, ACPI devices)
  • PCI Scan, moved from snooper to .psd, improved.
  • suspend support for SMP computers (computers with VIA chipset are supported; Lenovo T60 is supported)
  • support of VIA chipset
  • support of new Danis IDE driver

moreover,

  • updated Intel ACPI machine several times
  • every user has own model of computer. we spend time to support users and investigate every model of PC
  • every chipset has own specific problems. the research required some monthes
  • users have old drivers - it's not easy to make them upgrade device drivers to versions ready for ACPI
  • OEMHLP$ driver is embedded to OS/2 kernel. it was replaced (in other words, the kernel of eCS is updated)

2. Video drivers

Panorama VESA is updated (20071120)

  • Panorama VESA works on old processors which do not have MTRR (useful for mini-notebooks).
  • Fix for "computer hangs after switch to fullscreen text mode"
  • Moreover, updated WPS Setup, updated FAQ

3. Internet utilities

4. USB stack and applications

USB Dock was updated during the fall -- BETAZONE

OpenOffice.org 2.0 for eComStation and OS/2 WPS integration package

2007-11-26 20:48:30 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

Serenity Systems International and Mensys BV are pleased to announce the availability of the WPS integration package for OpenOffice.org 2.0 for eComStation and OS/2.

This package is available to all subcribers of the OpenOffice.org for eComStation and OS/2 Support Agreement, via their login at the Mensys online shop.

** Features **

- Extends the WPS data file class to recognize OpenOffice.org document files
- Integrated support for WPS-Wizard hint and folder info area
- Rexx hooks for reading document properties

** Installation **

The package is provided as a WarpIn package. Installation is performed by a
double click on the base WPI file (OOoWPS100.wpi).

Please note that WarpIn 1.0.15 or higher is required.
You can download the latest WarpIn package from http://warpin.netlabs.org

[ WPS data file class ]

The WPS classes do not require OpenOffice.org to be installed to allow
displaying of properties and preview thumbnail.

OpenOffice.org for eComstation and OS/2 must be installed to allow
drag'n'drop printing and opening of files. Use of the OpenOffice.org
quickstart feature allows faster printing and opening, otherwise a new
instance of the OpenOffice.org binaries will be invoked.

[ WPS-Wizard support ]

If you have installed WPS-Wizard (see below) please select the main
WPS-Wizard installation directory, otherwise scripts cannot be placed in
the proper place.

WPS-Wizard official homepage: http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/
WPS-Wizard latest info: http://svn.netlabs.org/wps-wizard/

[ REXX hooks ]

See the WPS-Wizard scripts for a sample use of rexx hooks.

** Known issues **

- Objects do not show 'in use' status when opened.

** Support **

Support specific to the eComStation and OS/2 version can be obtained
through the ticketing system at: http://www.ecomstation.com/support/ooo2/

If you find any bugs, issues, or have other remarks, please provide as many
details as possible and attach the soffice.log file created at every OOo2
crash: this file is located into your OpenOffice.org.2.0\program\ directory.

A newsgroup is available for community support at:

news://news.ecomstation.com/ecomstation.support.openoffice
or

ACPI 3.01, testing suspend/resume

2007-08-17 12:25:34 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

New generation of ACPI sub-system is available. eComStation supports suspend/resume on multi-core notebooks and barebones now. FAQs are published at ACPI tools homepage

How to setup sleep/resume? (APM.doc)

  • Use Panorama VESA video driver
  • Goto BIOS Setup, Enable "Init video after S3". If no such option then ACPI.PSD should try to perform this operation. Add ACPI.PSD /VBE to init video BIOS after resume. (there are no guarantees that this will work)
  • Edit acpid.cfg, suspend should be: suspend=S3
  • How to suspend? Open Power object -> Suspend
  • How to resume after sleep? Press Power button.

How to achieve success in testing?

  • update danis506.add to 1.8.1 (How to update Danis -- Software updates)
  • disable all device drivers before testing suspend/resume (USB, audio, network)
  • You can see the list of Sleep states supported by your computer when starting ACPI daemon (S1 - computer is stopped; S2 - computer is stopped, part of devices are powered off; S3 - all devices are powered off, except memory; S4 - all devices are powered off; S5 - power off)
  • Post the report to the tracker

How to help to other users? Share the results of your tests.

Step 1: Post report about your computer/motherboard to Hardware database

Step 2: If you have installed eCS 2.0 RC1 or higher then Goto ecomstation.com Please include the \var\log\instlog.zip file, this contains all of your configured settings, as well as a small overview of the hardware. This makes it easier for us to identify supported (or unsupported) hardware.

Install ACPIFU WPI (Fast Upgrade) if 3.0 is working fine on your computer.

ACPI 3.01, what's new:

ACPI.PSD

  • fix SpeedStep&Throttling for Uni kernel and MADT absent in acpi table
  • expand LAPIC ESR handling
  • fix memory heap
  • add duration of HLT

APM.ADD:

  • rebuild ACPI_STATE_S1
  • fix going to absent state
  • optimize throttling setting

Join testing of CUPS + Gutenprint + ESP Ghostscript available

2007-06-11 16:02:16 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru, Paul Smedley]

I've just uploaded a package consisting of CUPS 1.2.11 + ESP Ghostscript 8.15.4 + Gutenprint 5.1.2

This combination should allow printing on OS/2 & eComStation with printers that have not previously had drivers for our favourite OS - see the listing for details

The package can be downloaded from SVN site, Also at that site are some directions on how to use the package.

Assuming success with the directions at that site, people could also try Bart's cups port driver in order to be able to print from existing OS/2 applications using CUPS

As usual, feedback is appreciated to either paulDESPAM@DESPAMsmedley.info or to the ecups mailing list

Cheers,

Paul Smedley

USB Tools homepage updated

2007-06-06 18:14:37 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

Welcome to USB Tools homepage

There are useful tricks and tips from Robert Lalla there, for example how to improve USB 2.0 read performance (Common USB FAQ).

Read the feedback from testers:

  • User 1: With that patch I can improve read speed of large files from a high performance USB stick (Buffalo Firestix "R") from 16MB/s upto 32MB/s on an Intel dualcore system or upto 25MB/s on an older AthlonXP/VIA system. For comparision: Manufacturer says "read 32MB/s" and independent benchmarks from computer magazines on Windows say 25MB/s or 27MB/s. Unfortunately that patch does not help for write speed. I still measure 3.5MB/s, which is way below manufacturer's 27MB/s write specification, or results from other OS.
  • User 2: Intel ICH8: I had performance: 3 MB/s, now I have 11.5-12..13
  • User 2: nVidia chipset - no changes
  • User 2: Intel P5B-VM 10 MB/s up to 30Мб!!!!

Please send us source code, links to USB tools and applications which are using USBCALLS.

Please inform us if you are supporting industrial USB hardware via USBECD driver.
